Interactive Metronome®

What is Interactive Metronome®?

Interactive Metronome® (IM) is an evidence-based assessment and training tool that helps strengthen the brain’s ability to synchronize thought and movement to a steady metronome beat. IM responds to a client’s physical performance by providing real-time auditory and visual millisecond feedback indicating whether they are hitting before, after or in sync with the beat. The overall goal of IM training is to improve timing in the brain, or Neurotiming, through rhythm and repetition.

How do SLPs utilize IM?

Speech Language Pathologists specialize in communication and swallowing disorders, but the effect these conditions have on individuals goes well beyond trouble expressing words. So, what is really needed is a tool that will help address these problems at their core, deep in the nervous system. Without proper training, pediatric clients may be left struggling to keep up with their peers and adults may lose their independence and safety in a world growing faster and more dangerous every minute.

There is help, and SLPs are talking about Interactive Metronome® (IM). Neurotiming is critical to speech, language and cognitive function. Timing is the basis for attention, working memory and processing speed, all of which are critical for auditory processing, reading and language development.

How do OTs utilize IM?

Occupational Therapists understand quality of life, and they know how important the simple things can be. Life is about playing with your kids, gardening, playing an instrument, dancing, and sometimes, balancing the checkbook. Life is about…well, living. Regardless of the situation, maintaining functional independence is crucial for completing most activities of daily living (ADLs). To do that, your clients need to restore the efficient, synchronized communication between their functional brain networks; this communication relies on timing.
